Back or neck pain? We could help you using Spinal Decompression Therapy.
WHAT IS SPINAL DECOMPRESSION THERAPY?
If you suffer from the pain associated with herniated discs, facet syndrome, bulging discs, degenerative joint disease, pinched nerves, or other spinal issues, Spinal Decompression Therapy could help. Using computer-aided technology, Dr. Amy and Dr. Matt will apply gentle, non-surgical decompression to your spine to increase circulation into the spinal discs and joints. This will relieve your pain and dysfunction and can help you to avoid invasive surgery or having to depend on drugs.
HOW DO SPINAL DECOMPRESSION TREATMENTS FEEL?
Most people tell us that Spinal Decompression Therapy is very relaxing. Dr. Matt and Dr. Amy are very attentive to your responses during treatment and your comfort is a priority.
If you are a lower back patient you will choose whether you prefer to lie on your stomach or your back. Once you are comfortable, padded straps stabilize your body on the table for treatment. If your neck is the source of your pain, you will lie on your back in a semi-seated position and a soft rubber neck harness will help to manipulate the neck and head. (add drawings of positions)
After you are in a relaxed position, Dr Amy or Dr Matt will then begin to guide the computerized table to pull your body slightly in different places. This will allow you to ease into the treatment and maximize its effectiveness. Each of the different scientifically determined manipulations will be held for approximately 45 to 60 seconds and then followed by a 30 second relax interval. This active phase of the treatment lasts 10-15 minutes and then is followed by gently decreasing steps in the tension to leave you feeling calm and relaxed. (add photos of treatment)
Our patients consistently tell us how good they feel afterward. They are amazed that so little pressure could be so effective and tell us that they expected far more discomfort.
Dr. Matt and Dr. Amy are well trained in providing Spinal Decompression Therapy and customizing your treatment for your particular requirements. We specialize in using our state-of-the-art equipment which is critical for these great outcomes.
WHY DOES SPINAL DECOMPRESSION WORK?
During treatments, Spinal Decompression gradually stretches your spine to increase the disc space between spinal bones. That creates a vacuum in the disc which pulls the disc away from the pinched nerve. Small improvements from treatment to treatment gradually decrease the disk herniation or bulge to provide relief of your pain. (add diagram)
The treatment also facilitates nutrient exchange called imbibition. As the level of nutrients increase in the disc, the rate of healing is improved. Discs don’t usually receive much blood and acquire their own nutrients so this process is very effective in helping you heal more rapidly. Research shows (reference) that disc space can increase 1-3 mm over a course of treatment which will take tremendous pressure off sensitive nerves.
In essence, Spinal Decompression is an updated form of standard traction or the more recent use of an inversion table. With Spinal Decompression, computer technology controls variations in the unloading of the spine, effectively avoiding the body's muscle contraction response.
Traction (both traditional and when suspended upside down) is intended to stretch the spine to readjust stress on the nerves but can result in increased pressure on the discs. Unfortunately, while traction can give some short-term relief, in the century since it began to be used, it has provided limited long-term effectiveness. The abrupt change in positioning in traction is less effective than the incremental adjustments provided by Spinal Decompression Therapy. And, with this approach, discs heal because they are rehydrated which leads to amazing pain relief.
Other alternatives to Spinal Decompression Therapy include Manual Spinal Decompression, Flexion Distraction, or Imbibition. These can all be beneficial for the spine. Unlike Spinal Decompression Therapy, however, research doesn’t indicate that they are effective in decompression on the discs or long-term reduction of disc herniations and or bulges.
WHAT CONDITIONS DOES SPINAL DECOMPRESSION HELP?
Spinal Decompression Therapy is not appropriate for all types of back and neck pain. Studies show that dramatic improvements are likely for
- SCIATICA (pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling in the leg caused by injury to or compression of the sciatic nerve.)
- RADIATING NECK PAIN (pain in the neck that spreads down into the shoulders, arms or hands)
And very good outcomes are found with
- Chronic neck pain
- Chronic low back pain
Some other conditions including spinal stenosis and significant bone spurring have lower success rates with Spinal Decompression Therapy but can also be helped.
Dr. Matt and Dr. Amy will evaluate your symptoms and give you the probable results for your condition. We care about each patient and provide treatments that are most likely to be effective. In peer-reviewed research studies ( ) between 82-93% of patients had good-to-excellent clinical improvements after the normal course of 20-25 treatments.
HOW MUCH DOES SPINAL DECOMPRESSION COST?
Spinal Decompression Treatments usually costs $125 per office visit. In most cases 20 visits will be necessary to maximize the long-term relief of your pain. Some people report significant reduction in as few as six visits and occasionally someone will report feeling much better after the first 45 minute treatment. Your Spinal Decompression Treatment will be followed by ice and cold laser in order to speed your healing. (check details of treatment)
